FIRE learning and planning resources
Free public reading on financial independence and early retirement, with Malaysian planning references.
Learn about FIRE
Start with a public introduction to financial independence and early retirement, including the main ideas, trade-offs, and risks.
What is FIRE, and how does it work?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. This introduction explains how spending, saving, and investing relate to making paid work optional, along with different FIRE approaches and the risks of retiring early.
Read Schwab's introduction to FIREThis guide is published by Charles Schwab, a U.S. financial services firm. Use it for general FIRE knowledge: U.S. tax, pension, and health-insurance rules do not automatically apply in Malaysia. This is educational reading, not a recommendation to buy a product or change your investments.

Understand EPF withdrawals
Check the official age 55 and 60 withdrawal rules and eligibility. For early retirement, consider which savings you can access before relying on EPF; other withdrawal options have their own conditions.
Read EPF's withdrawal guidanceExplore inflation and living costs
Review official Malaysian Consumer Price Index trends by category and state when revisiting your spending assumptions. Your household's inflation can differ from the national headline figure.

Use SC's Investment Checker to check whether a person or entity is authorised to provide capital-market products or services in Malaysia. Authorisation is not a guarantee of returns or protection from investment losses.

The Courage to Be Disliked
Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga. Atria Books, 2018. ISBN 9781501197277.
A dialogue introducing Adlerian ideas about choice, relationships, and belonging. GenFIRE's practices are original adaptations inspired by these themes, not quotations, an official companion, or a clinically validated treatment.
The exercises cover choice, purpose, courage, separation of tasks, freedom, community feeling, horizontal relationships, self-acceptance, confidence in others, contribution to others, and the life tasks of work, friendship, and love.

A self-help book offers a perspective, not a diagnosis. Depression is not a failure of choice or courage. Support, treatment, and changes to difficult conditions can matter.

FIRE calculator
GenFIRE: free Malaysia FIRE & retirement calculator
Could your savings support the life you want? Explore when work could become optional, how much you may need, and what changes when income, expenses or loan repayments change.
Free to use. No account needed to try. No bank connection required.
Built with Malaysians in mind; other countries can use their own currency and assumptions. Educational estimates, not financial advice or guaranteed returns.
What could your FIRE target be?
Start with this spending-based example. These sample numbers are not recommendations.
Illustrative target in today's money
MYR 3,000 x 12 months x 25 = MYR 900,000
This is spending x 12 x multiplier, not a retirement forecast. It does not account for future inflation, returns, debts or tax. Values stay in this page and are not saved or copied into your plan.
Go beyond a single retirement number
Plan around Malaysian finances
Model employee and employer retirement contributions, MYR spending and loan repayments. Keep retirement funds separate from money available for early retirement. Check EPF access rules yourself; the app does not enforce every eligibility rule.
Let your budget change with life
Use year ranges for salary changes, income stopping or expenses continuing. Review house loans and car loans alongside the savings you could build after repayment.
Understand the calculation
Explore included and outside-projection assets, inspect graph breakdowns and adjust assumptions. Try without an account; log in only when you want to sync saved plans across devices.
Your first plan, step by step
- Set your assumptions. Start with your age, inflation and retirement spending.
- Add your financial picture. Enter asset values, loan balances, monthly income and expenses. Estimates are fine for exploring a scenario.
- Review and adjust. Choose saving priorities, click Review inputs and fix any highlighted errors, then select Refresh / show results. Review again after making changes.
Already have a plan? Opening Plans keeps your current inputs; it does not reset them.

Is GenFIRE free to use?
Yes. The financial calculators and wellbeing reflection tools are free to use. You can try both without an account. Login is required to save wellbeing entries or sync financial plans across devices. Optional donations support the project but are not required to use either tool.
Is GenFIRE only for Malaysians?
GenFIRE is built with Malaysian users in mind, including practical cash-flow, debt, savings, and retirement planning workflows. Users in other countries can also use it by choosing their preferred currency and entering assumptions that fit their situation.
Is GenFIRE financial advice?
No. GenFIRE is an educational planning calculator. It helps you explore scenarios, but it is not financial, investment, tax, legal, retirement, or professional advice.
Who can see my wellbeing entries?
Unsaved writing stays in the current tab and is cleared when you leave, reload, or log out. Saving requires login and your explicit agreement. Only the owning account can open saved entries in the app; they are not shown to other users or in the admin dashboard, and are not sent to an AI provider. Storage is not end-to-end encrypted, so authorised infrastructure operators may technically access stored data. You can delete saved entries at any time.
Does Wellbeing replace professional care?
No. Wellbeing provides self-reflection tools, not diagnosis, therapy, medical advice, or crisis support. Personal ratings are not diagnostic tests, and entries are not monitored. Consider a qualified health professional if symptoms persist, worsen, or affect daily life. In immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
